The deep buccal fat pad is a mass of fat beneath the superficial fat layer. It sits higher in the cheek until around age 18, then gradually descends with aging, contributing to sagging cheeks, jowl-like fullness and deeper nasolabial folds. In younger people it is also a major cause of facial roundness. Removing it can create a younger, smaller and slimmer face and, when performed early, may address an underlying cause of later cheek sagging.

Bone structure is not the only factor determining facial contours, so some concerns can be corrected without bone reduction. Effective procedures such as deep buccal-fat removal and facial liposuction can create smooth, natural contours.

It depends on the procedure. Double-chin treatment uses an incision below the chin; jawline contouring uses one behind the ear; deep buccal-fat and cheek procedures use an intraoral incision. Sutures are generally removed within one week.

Do not smoke before surgery, as cigarettes contain substances that can trigger phlegm, sneezing, and postoperative bleeding.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or a thyroid disorder, or are taking any medication, inform your coordinator.

Follow the required preoperative fasting period.

On the day of surgery, remove contact lenses, jewelry, nail polish, and similar items in advance.

Wear comfortable clothing that will not irritate the surgical area.

Driving may be difficult after surgery.

Avoid hard and chewy foods for one month.

If your procedure involved an intraoral incision, use mouthwash to keep the mouth clean and help prevent inflammation and infection.
